What does the Bible have to say about the experience of being a single Catholic?

Maybe you’re wondering why the Lord placed the desire for marriage on your heart, but hasn’t introduced you to your future spouse. Perhaps this season of singleness is particularly raw, and you don’t know where to turn for comfort.

Regardless of where you’re at on your journey as a Catholic Single, here are nine Bible verses you need to memorize.

1. When you’re feeling the challenges of being single

“The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ [Jesus] will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little” (1 Peter 5:10).

2. If you’re doubting that God can redeem your story

“See, I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? In the wilderness I make a way, in the wasteland, rivers” (Isaiah 43:19).

3. When the loneliness seems overwhelming

“Father of the fatherless, defender of widows—God in his holy abode, God gives a home to the forsaken, who leads prisoners out to prosperity, while rebels live in the desert” (Psalm 68:6-7)

4. If you’re worn out by the waiting

“Have pity on me, LORD, for I am weak; heal me, LORD, for my bones are shuddering. My soul too is shuddering greatly—and you, LORD, how long? Turn back, LORD, rescue my soul; save me because of your mercy” (Psalm 6:3-5)

5. When your heart is anxious

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

6. When someone rejects you

“Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:4-5).

7. If you’re afraid of taking the next step

“For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God” (2 Timothy 1:7-8).

8. When your plans keep falling through

“Many are the plans of the human heart, but it is the decision of the Lord that endures” (Proverbs 19:21).

9. When the season of singleness feels never-ending

“There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1).
