UNSUNG HEROES
BY: MARK ANTHONY ROSOLOWSKI

As Memorial Day approaches, let us remember why we have Memorial Day. The day was originally called Decoration Day, to honor the men and women who died in service to the country in the Civil War., when their graves were "Decorated" with American Flags.

Waterloo, NY was named as the birthplace of Memorial Day by Lyndon Johnson in May of 1966, but its true birthplace is unknown. The only thing that is agreed on is that it is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

While these men and women are true heroes, we forget the most important people in the service to the United States, which are the spouses of the American Servicemen and women. It is because of these spouses who keep the homes running smoothly, who spend countless hours alone and worrying about things we never have to, and put at ease those who are protecting our freedom. It has often been said. "The bravest person in the service to America is the spouse." No truer words have ever been spoken and to those widows and widowers of our fallen men and women, thank you for your service and sacrifice to our country.

In schools where I have taught, I have often been given the task of preparing for patriotic days such as Memorial Day. As a previous wife of a Vietnam vet with all the challenges that role placed on me, I made sure to not only honor our service men and women, but I also made sure I conveyed the thoughts you express here. The spouses and families of our warriors need apprefiation as well. God bless you, gk
