Q & A - Nov 12, 2009

by FrJim on Nov 12th, 2009 @ 10:31 PM

Dear Father Jim:

My question is not related to this catholicsingle.com or to any relationship.

I was on my way home going a little shoping in here in downtown seattle, and I was waiting for a bus that will take me home, and suddenly one bus caught my attention regarding a very big advertisement on that side of the bus,it was in bold letters, and it says,YES VIRGINIA, THERE IS NO GOD, it came from a freedom of religion organization, from madison wi, actually i saw it on 2 bus that passed infront of me, I was stunned to see that word, and the background of that billbord is some kind of christmas , at first i thought it was kind of joke, but it was  real...

I am so scared of that subject to be brought to anyones attention. I email you regarding this cause I know I can trust you, I just want to have peace of mind , to tell honestly m ive been crying since i came back home from seing that billboard, I was bothered but what can i do? -- Disturbed...

Dear Disturbed...

I'm sorry this billboard/advertisement upset you so much.  I've heard about this - in fact I used it in a homiy I wrote a few months ago.  You can read it  at http://chernjam.blogspot.com/2009/04/there-probably-is-no-godso-stop.html

I find the whole thing disturbing, but interesting as well.  I don't believe in Aliens or UFO's, but I don't take out billboards to try to convince other people of something I don't believe in - you get what I'm saying... I'm more interesting in sharing things I do believe in.  What do I care about people who are interested in aliens... I don't believe in them - why would I waste any time on the issue (let alone money on a billboard)

It's almost that these individuals don't just not believe in God - they hate God - which is beyond sad.

What can we do? - we pray for them - and we pray for ourselves... to remain steadfast in our conviction that Jesus Christ is Lord.  Confident that the Holy Spirit can use our example and witness help to change the hardest of hearts.    A great place to look is Pauls letter to the Romans (8:38):  For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor ANY OTHER CREATURE WILL BE ABLE TO SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD

God Bless, Father Jim
