After being estranged from the church for 30+ years, I've been active again for the last 3. Please note I've never been estranged from God, just the church. I'm having difficulty now understanding the church as the sexual abuse allegations continue to rise and it becomes clear that worldwide, the church handled the horrific acts of clergy by covering up. I understand that it's 1% of all ordained priests (that's the figure someone quoted me) and I personally don't know anyone who was abused (although I know a couple of men who I suspect were victims but they aren't talking) and none of the priests I know have been accused but I am HORRIFIED and ashamed of the catholic church. I know that forgiveness is a cornerstone of the church's teaching and belief and I'm sure many of these priests confessed and were forgiven but then they were forgiven and forgiven and forgiven ... and moved elsewhere. How could this happen?? Certainly not because it was the age of Aquarius and love was everywhere and some people got a little confused ... I think that was put out there for awhile when the scandal first broke in the U.S. Even if we accept that the psychological profiing was not adequate and some confused, troubled or evil people slipped through and that the psychological profiling is now being conducted with more depth, that doesn't explain the church's refusel to handle the situation with integrity. In church this morning I hoped to hear "For the victims of clergy sexual abuse ...". And yes, I want the pope to speak up. Back when the U.S. allegations were coming out, it seemed the pope took the attitude "it's an American problem". I think the last few months have clearly shown that it's happened in every country in the WORLD. The church's biggest shame ... May God have mercy on us all.
